That’s just some of the rubbish cleaned up during the Coastal Warriors’ September 2 effort along the Hastings River foreshore.

Sixty volunteers pitched in to collect the rubbish in just a few hours.

A spokesperson for Coastal Warriors said the group had identified cigarette butts as ‘by far the biggest problem.’

The full list of the rubbish collected and sorted was: 7060 cigarette butts, 950 whole and remnants of plastic packaging, 100 aluminium cans, 83 glass bottles, 106 metres fishing line, one pram and one injured bird (taken to local vet).

Coastal Warriors president Addam Lockley said the group has received a great deal of interest since he and his mate Liam McAlary got together a few months ago to come up with a plan to combat litter in our local area.

The community group has already earmarked its next outing.

“We're tackling trash further afield next month, with the next cleanup event planned for Bonny Hills in October,” the spokesperson said.

“Volunteers will be rewarded for their contribution to keeping our beaches clean with a free savoury or sweet muffin with any beverage purchased from The Fat Fish.

“We're really keen for locals from Bonny Hills, Lake Cathie, North Haven and Laurieton to get involved, but we're also calling on people from Port Macquarie to head down to help.

“Litter isn't a localised problem.

“Once it enters the ocean, it travels far and wide, and becomes a problem for all marine life and all of us.”

Coastal Warriors’ next clean up is on Saturday October 7, meeting near the Wauchope Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills with registration at 8.30am until 11am.
