Last weekend saw the Mid-North Coast enjoy another dose of sublime winter weather, with mild temperatures, light winds and calm seas. Unfortunately this weekend is not forecast to provide any of these desired conditions.

In the estuary, nice flathead to around 2 kilograms have continued to be caught with soft vibes proving the premier form of attack. I know I mention this type of lure often, but these things are just so effective many other lures, or baits seem to be a distant second option.
On the bream scene, the coal wall and surrounds provided a few nice bags last weekend, with chicken gut proving particularly successful. Whiting numbers are surprisingly good for this time of year, with Big Bay holding a few exceptional fish and Lake Cathie producing good numbers albeit of a much smaller class.
Blackfish numbers remain down although look for the breakwalls to fish well if the swell predicted for late this week indeed eventuates. On the mulloway front, there are still a few school-sized fish active around the up river structures and deeper holes, although tides this weekend are optimum for chasing the larger fish from the breakwalls and other locations in the lower reaches.
Off the beaches, results have been a little down over the past week which is not unexpected as winter draws to a close. North Beach is still giving up some reasonable bream, while Lighthouse has also produced bream and a sprinkling of tailor. If the seas don’t get up too much, chasing school mulloway from both locations could be worth the effort over the next few nights.
Off the rocks, there are still some nice drummer about, with Hat Head and around Nobby and Rocky beaches producing some nice fish over the past week. It never ceases to amaze me why most drummer enthusiasts don’t prospect our local ledges a little more often, as there are certainly good fish to be had within 5 minutes of the middle of town.
Tailor numbers have been down a little however the quality remains terrific, with Lighthouse producing some nice greenbacks throughout the week. Plenty of blackfish for those willing to throw a bit of cabbage around, while night time anglers have been achieving some quality bream from both Plomer and Lighthouse. Groper also remain most active from pretty well all headlands for those keen to target them.
On the offshore scene, snapper numbers have picked up with good results achieved on both plastics and baits. Last weekend again saw the better fish taken from the wider reefs off Lighthouse, however closer in off Plomer had a much nicer water colour and as such, also fished well. Apart from snapper, a few pearl perch, teraglin and flathead featured in most catches. Interestingly, we have also had a run of barracouta offshore over recent weeks, with this species usually found in numbers further south than here.
Until next week, good fishing tight lines to all.
