Despite more rain, wind and big seas earlier in the week, this weekend is shaping up well for anglers with a combination of good tides, reasonable weather and plenty of fish about.

In the estuary, bream numbers have been excellent with the breakwalls producing quality fish to well over a kilo early morning and evening. Bag limit catches have been common, particularly by those using gut baits or yabbies at night. Those fishing the walls have also been scoring some nice mulloway, with large hard bodied lures proving effective on the larger fish.
Further upstream, flathead action remains excellent, with lures and whitebait achieving the better results. And finally, blackfish have at long last begun to show up in better numbers. It seems the latest bit of crook weather sparked the action, with pretty well any location in the lower Hastings worth a look.
Lake Cathie has also been fishing well, with some quality fish to around a kilo and a half around the bridge. Green weed, cabbage and weed flies have all been productive.
On the beaches, the big seas earlier in the week have seen a bit of a temporary setback. Bream numbers have picked up with Lighthouse and South Beach at Dunbogan fishing well, while school mulloway have been taken from both of these locations and North Beach. Tailor have been reasonable from most stretches of sand, with good reports of quality greenbacks from Diamond Head and Kylies Beach to the south. Still a few nice whiting around the entrance of Lake Cathie with worms by far the bait of choice.
Off the rocks, our winter season is in full swing with plenty of fish about. To the north, Hat Head and Plomer have produced terrific numbers of tailor, bream and drummer, and a sprinkling of school mulloway. To the south, Point Perpendicular has yielded drummer, blackfish and tailor, while Diamond Head has been excellent for drummer and good bream. Locally, Lighthouse has been consistent on the tailor front, while Shelley and Rocky beaches have been worth a look for drummer and blackfish.
Offshore action during the past week has been limited but those who managed to get out before the seas came up reported some nice snapper from the close-in reefs off Lighthouse Beach and Plomer. Best results have been achieved by those throwing plastics, with good numbers of fish in the 2kg to 6kg bracket on offer. Apart from snapper, pearl perch and teraglin numbers are solid off Plomer, while a little wider, kingfish numbers have been reasonable with quite a few unstoppable models chasing live baits and jigs.
Until next week, good fishing and tight lines to all.
