PIRATES coach Chris Young described his sides five point loss to the Cannonballs as “really disappointing”. He said they were their own worse enemy in the defeat to a side they knew would be tough to overcome.
“They played well and defended well but we lost the game really,” he said. “We made too many mistakes and weren’t consistent enough.
“We’ve been doing it all year, giving away multiple penalties and making vital errors at vital times.”
Young believes major changes are not the answer, simply fixing the fundamentals will be enough to catapult them into contenders.
“It’s about getting back to basics. We have a lot of younger guys, so we are still trying to gel everyone together,” he said.
Hastings Valley Vikings 67 def Wauchope Thunder 0
IT was a game of two halves at Oxley Oval in the Vikings first big victory for the year.
Coach Mark Howard instructed his team to hold the ball and keep it away from their opponents, and that they did.
“The possession turned a little in the second half and they threatened our line a couple of times, but our boys kept turning up,” he said.
The Vikings led 50-0 after 40 minutes, but the Thunder came back in the second half with more intensity.
“A big credit to the Thunder boys, because a lot of them had to play two games. You can build good team morale that way and I know they will keep improving.”
