The award is the highest honour a non-service member can achieve and is in recognition of outstanding honorary service rendered to the league, ex-service personnel and their dependants.
Beryl accepted the award in April at a special event at the Wauchope RSL Club.
The award was made to Mrs Crossingham by state RSL president, John Haines, and Wauchope president, Des Hancock.
Records show that from 1969 to 2000, Mrs Crossingham was a consistent, popular, willing and hard working member of the central council of women’s auxiliary.
During her continuous membership she led by example and was always at the forefront whenever work had to be done, said Mr Haines.
“Beryl has contributed long and outstanding service starting back in 1969,” he said.
“Most of their funds were raised through catering and Beryl’s cooking for cake stalls was carried out at home and at her expense.
“Her efforts were totally voluntary and energies went towards raising of substantial funds for disbursement to approved charities within the RSL movement.”
Her efforts represent some 48 years of voluntary service to aid the ex-service community, and various other community groups, a remarkable feat by any standards
- Des Hancock
From 2000 and up to 2017, Mrs Crossingham has been actively involved in fundraising through her efforts in selling badges for each Anzac Day and Armistice Day, Mr Hancock said.
“Many people will remember Beryl’s smiling face at the badge tables over these years,” he said.
“Her efforts represent some 48 years of voluntary service to aid the ex-service community, and various other community groups, a remarkable feat by any standards.
“But our Beryl did not stop there.
“She was also involved in voluntary help at the Wauchope Legacy Op Shop from 1975 to 1985 and has been involved in fund raising, by cooking, for several local churches.”
Along with her certificate, Mrs Crossingham was presented a gold badge.
Her Citation for the award read in part: Mrs Crossingham was recommended for this Certificate of Merit, the RSL’s highest award for non-service members, for many things but mostly for being a shining emblem of the aims and objects of the Returned and Services League.
Past and present members of the Wauchope RSL Sub-branch congratulate and thank Beryl for her unstinting service to our organisation and wish her all the best in her retiring years.
