Deputy mayor Lisa Intemann will officially greet a team of international runners from the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run — the world’s longest torch relay — at Gaol Point, Port Macquarie, at 12pm on Thursday, June 1.
The Peace Run is a truly global event that aims to promote friendship and understanding in the world community. It was founded in 1987 by peace ambassador Sri Chinmoy, who has been internationally recognised for his numerous peace initiatives.
Since its inception, the Peace Run has traversed across 150 nations and touched the lives of millions of people. It does not seek to raise money or highlight any political cause, but simply strives to create goodwill among peoples of all nations.
“The Peace Run is our way of saying that world peace must begin within the heart of each of us, and that only by transcending the barriers that divide us from our better selves as well as from others, will our world be a true Oneness-Home,” Sri Chinmoy said.
This year, 2017, celebrates the 30th anniversary of the first Peace Run. In Australia, a team of runners from 13 nations is carrying the torch over 3,500 kilometres from Brisbane to Adelaide.
Members of the Hastings community are encouraged to join the lead runner as they run into Port Macquarie, or line the streets and cheer them on as they pass by or join us at Gaol Point.
The torch will pass through the Port Macquarie CBD, along Horton Street, up Clarence Street through to Gaol Point where Cr Intemann will receive the Peace Torch on behalf of the people of Port Macquarie.
