A social media post from Maree Dillon prompted the North Side Progress Association to further investigate the idea.
Association president Kingsley Searle said his group was ‘as keen as mustard’.
“It is a matter of watch this space,” he said. “This is a fantastic idea and we are planning to site street library boxes on the Hibbard and Settlement Point ferries.
“We will be approaching a local group to ask them to put together the necessary boxes … but we are certainly going ahead with the plan.”
Mr Searle said the idea had been taken up for a few residents ‘at a neighbourhood level’ and they continued to operate independently.
“It is an absolutely fantastic idea for our community,” he added.
Maree Dillon posted to the Port Macquarie North Shore Facebook site the idea earlier this month.
I would like to put to the population of the north shore that we erect a street libraries down near the ferries,” she said.
“This is where you can swap books (children’s books as well as adult) keep them as long as you like and give something back to the community.
“Maybe the North Shore Progress Association could put it to the council for funding and we can share the fun and knowledge from books for everyone — feeling excited.”
