Mayor Peter Besseling and Charles Sturt University Port Macquarie head of campus Professor Heather Cavanagh on April 27 officially opened the relocated lab at CSU Port Macquarie Campus.
The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Environmental Laboratory is the result of collaboration between the council and CSU.
Lab manager Dr Maree Smith said there was an opportunity to build science in the region, as well as provide an essential testing service to council and commercial customers.
The lab’s focus is water quality testing and then it will look to opportunities in the food and soil area.
There is also a strong teaching and research focus. Opportunities include work experience and research and development.
Cr Besseling said the lab would be fundamental to help drive science locally.
Professor Cavanagh said the lab demonstrated the clear benefits of the university and community working together.
