In its 107th year, the Wauchope Show did not disappoint from the cattle yards to the showjumping arena.
Day two of the show was topped off by the grand parade of competitors and exhibitors and the naming of the 2017 Wauchope Showgirl.
Nikki Gibbs took out this year’s crown and encouraged the next generation of show lovers to get on board to keep the tradition alive.
Dairy Goats
Dairy goat judge Liz Ruis was impressed with the calibre of competition in the dairy goat section of this year’s show.
In judging the entrants, Liz is looking for a goat that can produced between 4-6 litres of milk per day.
“We are looking for body confirmation and how well it is blended,” Liz explained. “It has to have longevity and has to be able to last the distance.
“To produce a good quantity of milk, the animal needs to have a wide chest and be good on its back feet.
“We look at its appearance and the teat definition and how well it is attached to the body – the better attachment the longer the animal will keep lactating.”
Beef Cattle
William Saul of Kempsey and his Limousin female has taken out the supreme champion show title in the beef cattle division of this year’s Wauchope Show.
His prize heifer was lauded by the judges as showy with style and displayed great depth from the top of the shoulders to its girth.
Woodchop
TWINS Jacob and Wade McBaron of Urunga went head to head in the junior division of the woodchop.
The boys are following in the footsteps of their grandfather Malcolm Taylor who was an exceptional axeman of his time.
The boys have been competing for about 12 months on the regional circuit and are honing their skills, strength and timing for future competition.
Lincoln Kellett of Dorrigo showed resilience as he carved his way through round one of the junior woodchop.
Lincoln, 10, has had an axe in his hand since he was a toddler according to proud dad Michael.
The young chap is a member of the North Coast Axemen’s Association.
Poultry
S and M Wilson of Rollands Plains have taken out the Grand Champion Bird of the Show with their bantam white leghorn cock.
Vice president of the Wauchope Poultry Society Robert Scott said the calibre of this year’s competition has been exceptional.
A rare breed, a Minorca owned by Jill Maitland of Eungai Rail, took out the Champion Soft feather title.
