Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has accepted a tender from MODE Design Corp to provide architectural design services for the airport terminal building upgrade.
Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peter Besseling said it is pleasing to see the upgrade to the Port Macquarie Airport terminal building progressing, with funding secured from federal, state and local government, and the tender awarded for the design of the upgrade.
“This will ultimately benefit not only our local travellers heading elsewhere, but provide for a more welcoming experience for our local, interstate and international visitors.”
Design works have started.
Cowper MP Luke Hartsuyker welcomed the final approval of $1.25 million in federal government funding for the upgrade project.
Mr Hartsuyker said the deed of agreement for the funding had been signed at the federal government level, meaning all the technical requirements have been met, and the funding promised before the 2016 election is ready to go.
“This is a very important project for the Port Macquarie Hastings region that will see a major upgrade to Port Macquarie Airport, including an expanded passenger check-in area, expanded departures and arrivals areas, enhanced security screening areas, and improved baggage claim facilities,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“Port Macquarie is one of Australia’s great tourism regions and this upgrade will provide a better experience for visitors to the region.”
The state government is providing $5 million towards the project.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said she knows the community is looking forward to seeing the final designs and eagerly awaiting the start of work on the upgrade of the terminal building.
“As a frequent flyer and a regular visitor to other regional airports, I know that the terminal is certainly in need of an upgrade to meet the growing demand and to attract carriers to Port Macquarie in the future,” she said.
“The Mid North Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, and it is imperative that infrastructure keeps pace and meets consumer expectations.”
The council owns and operates the airport.
Virgin Australia, QantasLink and JETGO provide flights.
