Approximately 15 students from year seven to 12 will venture to Sydney for the Google First Robotics competition in March.
The robot that these students made weighs 47 kilograms and is industrial standard.
Design and construction of additional parts for the competition challenges have been added by college student team.
They have also done the coding for the programmed element of the competition. Mentors from American universities have visited for two days at the start of the year, with teachers supporting the team from then on.
Student Jakk Baker from the Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus said the students worked hard on the robot and were excited to head to Homebush.
“We’re excited to be going to Homebush to enter the competition,” he said.
“It climbs with the winch that we made, which will give us a lot of points in the comp.
“It weighs as much as a red bin filled with water. There was a lot of work involved, working on the weekends and after school.”
The school students have taken on the robotic challenge as part of the Macquarie University’s Robots in the Outback program.
