The NSW government has welcomed a new report that will guide greyhound industry reforms.
The Greyhound Industry Reform Panel, headed by former Premier Morris Iemma, sought input from industry experts and animal welfare representatives, and considered the outcome of meetings with racing clubs and about 3000 written responses. It made 122 recommendations to pave the way for a new regulatory system to ensure the industry can continue, and meet community expectations. It recommended a new best-practice governance structure that separates commercial and regulatory functions. It also supports an enforceable code of practice for greyhound welfare; whole-of-life registration and tracking of dogs; and licensing and accreditation requirements.
I know how important greyhound racing is to our community and I am pleased the report has been released publicly. The government will prepare its response then introduce legislation to establish a new regulatory system. It is intended the new legislation will come into effect before July 1, 2017, and will be subject to a statutory review after three years. Public reserve funding
Managers of Crown reserves are encouraged to apply for funding under the NSW government’s $15 million Public Reserves Management Fund Program. The funding is for activities that support the maintenance and improvement of Crown reserves, which include local parks, community halls, regional showgrounds, and holiday parks. Activities can include repairs and maintenance, pest and weed control, new recreational infrastructure, and environmental initiatives.
Last year 460 improvement projects were funded from more than 800 applications across the state so funding is highly competitive. Applications close Friday, March 24. For more information, www.crownland.nsw.gov.au/crown_lands/crown_reserves/funding/PRMFP
