The Wauchope community has been asked to wear red, and hang a red ribbon or balloon outside this Sunday in support of the emergency services involved in the Pappinbarra bushfires – and some businesses have started early.
Wauchope Vets, who are treating injured animals free of charge, have tied red balloons to their mailbox, and Heart to Heart Lingerie in Wauchope have them in their window.
Local resident Sharon Wurm is behind the push for people to show their respect to those who risk their lives on the line.
“I see it as a way to give thanks to our firefighters, police, ambulance, the water bombing crews and everyone else who was out there putting their lives at risk to help others,” she said.
“It would be great to show them that the community supports them. They are there every day, whether they are fighting fires or not, I think they deserve their own day locally.”
