The clever year six student from Hastings Public School has taken out the Write 4 Fun National short story competition, beating over 9000 other entrants and netting a cool $500 for himself and another $500 for the school.
He wrote a captivating and smart story about ghosts, clearly wowing the judges.
Patch also placed second in the northern region for the Newcastle Permanent maths competition, not limiting his skills to one subject.
Different from other exams, Newcastle Permanent’s Primary School Mathematics Competition challenges students to complete the exam paper without using calculators, rulers or geometrical instruments.
“I like maths because there is always one definite answer to a question,” he said.
“On the other hand I like writing because of the opposite reason. You can be creative and write whatever story you want to.”
Other students, Kael Harris (year six) and Sam Kobelke (year six), from Hastings Public School, received third placings and Cameron Aird (year six) from Tackling Point Public School received a district award.
Frederik Morris from year five placed first in the Hastings district for the matchs competition and won $40.
