When he first began working, currency was still exchanged in pounds and shillings.
“The major changes have been the advancement in technology, the teamwork that has come into the business and the new culture which is all customer orientated,” he said.
On October 12 Coles unveiled their new look centre, which includes an in-store bakery, continental delicatessen and a new-look fresh produce section.
The centre has created 26 new local jobs through the refurbishment.
Over his employment Mr Zapatero has filled a variety of roles including store manager and vice president.
He said he enjoys a challenge and having a fresh outlook on the operations.
Mr Zapatero has been working in Port Macquarie for three years and helped to open the store for the town.
He enjoys getting to know local members of the community.
“We form a friendship with them, it’s nice to have a chat with them and you may not see them for a week or two but you can always relate to each other and that’s the best part about it,” he said.
