Despite the challenge of Independent Rob Oakeshott, Mr Hartsuyker retained the seat for the Nationals, a result that left Mary “quite delighted”.
While the final result was close, Mr Hartsuyker said he was humbled to be returned for the sixth time as the Member of Cowper.
“It’s always good to be back,” he said.
He said he was now looking forward to “getting down to business when Parliament resumes on the 30th of August”.
This morning’s brief proceedings at Kempsey included a formal ceremony for the declaration of the poll, where all candidates who ran in the seat of Cowper were invited to attend – though none other than Mr Hartsuyker took the opportunity.
“It is a great honour to be re-elected … my role now is to ensure I continue to be an effective voice in Canberra for the constituents of Cowper,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“I will also work hard on delivering Coalition Government commitments made during the campaign across the electorate.”
The declaration of the poll is a requirement of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Section 284) that the Divisional Returning Officer publicly declare the name of the successful candidate.
The AEC holds the formal declaration ceremony to also declare that the member is duly elected and can start their official duties as the appointed member for their division.
