The Work for the Dole team is revamping a boardwalk by removing timber decking, repairing foundations and replacing the decking.
The boardwalk is one of the access points to Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park, a 52 hectare park located in the centre of Port Macquarie.
Nortec Staffing Solutions Port Macquarie is the lead provider on the project.
Work for the Dole, funded by the federal government, places job seekers in activities to gain skills and experience which give back to the community and help them find a job.
Nortec activity management officer Kirsty Douglas said the participants were learning practical skills and other skills such as getting into a routine.
The participants are undertaking the construction work in conjunction with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
The group has recorded strong attendance during the project.
Ms Douglas attributed the strong attendance to the type of work, the enjoyment factor and supervisor Phil Pittis’ passion for the job.
Participant Anthony Hancock said the project gave him a sense of achievement as he learnt about carpentry, teamwork and leadership.
“It gives me something to do plus I like the jobs we finish,” Mr Hancock said about Work for the Dole projects.
Participant Jason Ridge enjoys the outside nature of the work, learning skills, the friendships and the job satisfaction.
“When it’s finished, you can look back and say I did that,” he said.
Mr Ridge hopes his Work for the Dole experience will lead to a council job.
“I’ve been in Port for a few years and I haven’t been able to find work,” he said.
“This is the next best thing.”
