Messina was beaten by top-seeded Russian Saadat Abdulaeva in the women's welterweight (69 kilogram) division after a hard-fought bout.
Messina pushed Abdulaeva all the way and after four hard rounds of toe to toe fighting the Port Macquarie product lost in a unanimous points decision.
According to the judges Messina won one round with the final score reading 39-37 which meant that all the rounds were scored 10-9.
Coach Dean Groth took to social media shortly after the bout, saying he was extremely proud of how far Messina had come in the championships.
"She performed like a true champion, didn't back down and took it up to the Russian. It was world class," he said.
"Jessica really gave everything in the bout and didn't back away."
It was a preliminary bout in the world championships where she would have progressed to the quarter finals if she won.
Groth felt Messina was on the end of a really tough draw. She drew Croatia in the first round then the Russian world number one in her second bout.
Messina narrowly defeated Croatian Croatian Jovana Vucic on Friday night to gain the opportunity to fight the Russian.
"Now that she is out of the competition, we will take the opportunity to go into camp and train and spar with the world's best boxers and trainers," Groth said.
Her next competition will be at the Australian golden gloves in August.
