A TOP 20 finish is what Lleyton Wall and Sam Begbie had to show for their experience with the New South Wales triathlon team at the national championships in Hervey Bay last month.
Wall finished 14th while Begbie completed the course in 16th after they both exited the swim leg with the leading group of athletes.
It is a pleasing result for the teenager's with Lleyton's father Ian saying they both performed extremely well.
"They both went really well in their age group all things considered," he said.
"When you basically finish top 15 in Australia it's not a bad effort because while there are a few ahead of you, there's quite a few behind you as well."
14-year-old Lleyton will go up in age groups next year with the main difference being that he will have to learn the technical side of triathlon.
"That's the main difference when they go up to that age group they have to be more technical and have to ride a bit differently," Mr Wall said.
The teenagers aimed for top 15 so they will hope to continue their improvement when the selection process starts again next year.
"They really enjoyed the experience of being around all the other kids and they're on a break now," Mr Wall said.
"Next year it all starts again."
