The Port Macquarie outer orbital link road corridor engineering feasibility investigation is examining the potential to construct an east-west link between the Oxley Highway and Ocean Drive, as well as a north-south link between the Oxley Highway and Hastings River Drive.
It looks at the physical and environmental constraints and will provide direction on appropriate corridors, potential road alignments and the process which the council will need to follow if it decides to advance the proposed road projects.
A road network planning update report was tabled at Wednesday night's Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting in response to a question on notice from Cr Adam Roberts.
Cr Roberts said he was regularly questioned and lobbied about roads.
"Obviously our road network is quite congested at times so I think its only fair for a councillor to be asking for updates and putting it in the public domain," Cr Roberts said.
An area wide traffic study will allow the council to analyse traffic movements across the local government area and model scenarios to determine what road upgrades and potential new roads may be required over the next five to 20 years.
This will include the ability to model the different road alignments identified by the orbital feasibility study to determine their overall impacts on traffic within the network.
The initial results of the model are expected towards the end of the fourth quarter 2016 with scenario modelling to occur in the first quarter of 2017.
The two studies are also looking at additional links to Port Macquarie Airport.
Road planning includes the design underway for the Lake Road upgrade to two lanes in each direction between the Oxley Highway and Ocean Drive.
