Traffic was brought to a standstill about 5pm on Thursday when the silver Toyota Hilux the man was driving mounted an embankment and jackknifed its trailer, spilling its load across the westbound lanes of the Oxley Highway 500 metres from the Wright's Road roundabout.
Police received numerous calls prior to the incident reporting the trailer for not having its load secured and dropping furniture on the road.
Witnesses said after navigating the roundabout the trailer began fishtailing and the driver lost control. The vehicle mounted an embankment and rolled onto its side while the trailer scattered its load.
A witness told police he spoke with the driver who appeared to flee the scene by walking back towards Port Macquarie.
Police arranged for the vehicle to be towed, but its registered owner arrived at the scene and had it taken to his property in Bonny Hills instead.
The fire brigade attended to clean up the fuel spilled on the road, with traffic only allowed to pass on the inside lane for more than an hour.
Once the road was reopened, police went to the driver's work address as they were concerned for his welfare.
A shower was running, but he wasn't there and police would like any one with information on his whereabouts to contact the Port Macquarie Police Station on 6583 0199.
