St Joseph's Primary School received a phone call at 11.50am, with a St Agnes Parish spokesman and police saying it was an "automated telephone call".
Following instructions from police, the Port News has chosen not to publish details of the threat.
St Agnes Parish's education coordinating officer John McQueen said police responded swiftly.
"Things went really well, the police were there very quickly and surveyed the whole outside of the school and carefully went through the inside as well," he said.
Once the school was considered clear of the threat, it was moved to safe mode.
A text message was sent to parents at 1.30pm stating, "Lockdown has now been lifted however children will be kept in classrooms until the end of the day... Your child's safety remains our priority".
It was one of 10 schools to be threatened throughout the state, police said, but the only one in the Hastings. Another school at Sawtell, however, was also threatened.
St Joseph's students will be guarded by a private security contractor for the remainder of the day and police will patrol as well.
Pick-up details have changed, with buses running as normal but students will be boarded from the hall.
Those students being picked up will need their parents to come to their classroom.
