Spirits of the Ghan is set around the completion of The Ghan railway, which runs from Adelaide to Darwin.
Nunn was inspired by a journey she took on The Ghan years ago.
"The red centre has always been a place in this wonderful wide brown land of ours that I've wanted to set a book," she said.
"I defy anybody to have been there and not get a sense of the spiritual."
Nunn shared insights into how Spirits of the Ghan evolved including the importance of parallels in the novel.
The author, actor and scriptwriter, known by many for her television roles from Prisoner to A Country Practice, Sons and Daughters, and Home and Away, has written 13 novels and a handful of children's books and eBook specials.
The Port Macquarie Library author talk on Wednesday was part of a five-week book tour.
Nunn said a number of people at book tour events had read more than one of her novels.
"What's thrilling for any writer to have that personal relationship [with the reader] is you know that those people who so loved your books have travelled their own journey," she said.
"When you read a book, you envisage the place, and the people, it all comes from your imagination."
Nunn has sold more than one million books worldwide.
