Former soldier Jason Gill, who served in Afghanistan as a result of the attack on America, initiated the intimate ceremony.
Mr Gill's touching tribute highlighted how the day changed the lives of so many people around the world.
"For us younger vets it's the day that changed our lives forever," he said.
During the service a number of bystanders also stopped to pay tribute and others left their own floral wreaths.
Mr Gill said he hopes the remembrance service will grow in 12 months time.
"It was only going to be me laying a wreath to commemorate the day but a few others jumped on board which was nice," he said.
"Hopefully next year we can build on it and spread the word about how important this date is."
