Payne, 13, can be found out at Port Macquarie Golf Club about six times per week, working on his game.
It's that dedication which has led to Payne playing in his first Morgans Seaside Classic which tees off tomorrow.
He's had a remarkable golfing rise, since taking up the sport just two and a half years ago.
Port Macquarie professional James Single came to his primary school, St Agnes, to introduce the kids to golf, and Payne hasn't looked back.
Payne carried the scoreboard for the leading group, and learnt plenty about the game in the process.
"I just walked with them," he said.
Payne had a good idea about what was needed for success in the Classic, which continues on Sunday.
"You need to hit the fairways and greens, and make your putts," he said.
Payne has got his handicap down to four.
He can't wait to tee off tomorrow.
The St Joseph's Regional College student considers his drive to be the most consistent part of his game.
His putt needs a bit of work, and the Port News found Payne on the putting green on Wednesday afternoon.
Another good young golfer in James Turner will be in action over the weekend.
