Don't risk a $55 fine
Enrolment is compulsory for Australian citizens aged 18 years and over and who have lived at their current address for at least a month. If you are between 16 and 18 years, enrolment is not compulsory.
If you are enrolled, voting is compulsory for state elections. You may be fined $55 if you do not vote without a sufficiently acceptable reason.
Reasons that are accepted as ‘sufficient’ are defined in the Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act 1912. They are that the elector:
- was deceased;
- was absent from NSW on Election Day;
- was ineligible to vote at the election;
- had an honest belief that not voting was part of his or her religious duty; or
- was unable for any reason acceptable to the Electoral Commissioner to vote at the election.
