Both the Sharks and the Breakers made it through to the finals this Sunday with the Blues forced to enter elimination finals at Old Bar on Saturday.
Breakers coach Ben Sprague said it was more of making sure his squad received a decent hit out on the field ahead of the proper competition.
"This is pretty much our pre-season," he said.
"Most of the other clubs all have other trials but we don't so its important to make sure we get the most out of it.
"We had 34 players on the day so it was more about making sure everyone got a fair go."
Sprague was impressed with how his side faired and said it was a good sign ahead of round one.
"As a group they played really well," he said.
"Even though the games were only 30 minute halves and it can be difficult to get into. They gelled really well considering we only did one ball work session ahead of it."
Sharks captain-coach Matt Shipway was pleased about keeping last year's runner-up the Blues scoreless in their match.
"That was probably the best part of that game," Shipway said.
"We got that vibe going and defended our line."
Shipway said the Sharks fell into the trap of niggling the Breakers in their match and not playing their best footy.
"Our blokes got a bit too fired up," he said.
"We had a bit of bad luck."
A strong headwind and plenty of Breakers possession did the Sharks no favours, as did the dusty Cathie field.
"With that really sandy base, our boys were feeling it in the legs," Shipway said.
