The day started early with a trial match between last year's premiership sides the Wauchope Blues and Port Sharks in the U18's.
It was a great first hit out for both sides and the Blues showed promise for the season ahead when they put a massive 30 points on the opposition in the sweltering conditions.
Newly appointed coach Jason Holland was impressed with his side's performance and said while there is plenty of room for improvement the basics are well and truly there in this talented young side.
Luckily by the time the big boys hit the field it had cooled off, not that you could tell as the Blues and Sharks were visibly fatigued as they tried to match it with the NRL stars for 40 minutes.
Although the Newcastle Knights were far too classy for the Group 3 sides, both the Blues and Sharks held their own at stages through the match.
First grade coach for the Blues Justin Laurie was happy with the heart his team showed as they never gave up and were impressive with some of their efforts in defence.
"It was a great experience and I'm happy we got out of it injury free, "said Laurie.
This was an obvious concern for Laurie taking his men into the match.
"We'd only been training for about a month coming up against a professional team I just hoped it wouldn't affect us" said Laurie.
The Blues will continue pre-season training leading into the 2015 season starting early April.
Training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Lank Bain sporting complex starting at 6pm.
Anyone interested in playing ladies league tag, under 18's or seniors is encouraged to come along and introduce themselves.
