The Dolphins are getting in early this time around. They've already hosted a number of open skills sessions where interested people are invited to showcase their talent ahead of formal tryouts.
Tryouts will be over three sessions conditioning, skills and game simulation in the new year.
Dolphins coach Mark Champion has been scouting the Wednesday night competition at the Port Macquarie Sports Stadium, looking for the latest young talent to join the team's ranks.
He wants to get more kids in the team. Champion has an eye on boosting development player numbers.
Development players are on the fringes of the squad. They train with the rest of the Dolphins and feature at home games.
Champion knows that will take time.
"We want to get the kids involved early," he said.
A few new faces are already on board. Port didn't have an under 18s representative team in the Northern Junior League this season, and Champion has been keen to get them into the Dolphins set up.
Justin Barnett's younger brother Brad is one of them.
Champion wants to bolster the side even further.
"We want to extend the squad with students coming to town," Champion said.
Training will be on Mondays and Thursdays at St Joseph's Regional College from 7pm.
"It's quite likely we will train on a weekend as well, leading up to the season," Champion said.
