Fire and Rescue NSW went to the fire at the northern end of Chalmers Street about 11.15pm.
Police arrived 15 minutes later to find the inside of the car destroyed.
The car had been parked for a couple of days because the owner wasn't able to start it.
"It looks like the fire started in the front passenger seat," a police spokesman said.
The car's owner, who is currently on crutches with a leg injury, attempted to salvage parts of his car on Friday morning.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
