Greg Laird was affected by a rare bout of silence as he was honoured with life membership to the Returned and Services League.
The Port Macquarie RSL sub-Branch president sat and listened as RSL state treasurer Rod White praised his friend's commitment.
"Every time I see Greg he always mentions something about this sub-Branch that he wants other people to know about, something that he's proud of," Mr White said.
And there was much to be proud of, the NSW treasurer said.
Since joining in Port Macquarie in 1988, Mr Laird has pushed numerous initiatives aimed at helping veterans and commemorating their sacrifices.
He joined the committee in 2003 and two years later was voted in to his current role.
Dignitaries in the room including Port Macquarie-Hastings Councillor Adam Roberts, MPs David Gillespie and Leslie Williams and superintendent Paul Fehon heard how Mr Laird has been heavily involved with pushing the RSL's involvement through welfare, zone eight bowls and hospitals and nursing homes.
He has also helped the National Servicemen's Association, the Royal Australian Air Force Association and cadet groups.
Port Macquarie sub-Branch treasurer Colin Clark said Mr Laird had been "instrumental in getting kids involved in delivering commemorative addresses".
Mr Laird's wife Lynne was overcome with emotion when she was presented with a special award by the state treasurer.
"Those of us who are in the RSL need those who support us," Mr White said. "Lynne has done a wonderful job and we thank her today."
