Virgin Australia is continuing its direct flights linking Port Macquarie and Brisbane but QantasLink last week announced it would end its direct Brisbane service due to low passenger numbers.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's acting director commercial services and industry engagement Rebecca Olsen said the QantasLink announcement was disappointing news but she understood the commercial pressure on airlines in the current operating environment.
"Council appreciates QantasLink's ongoing commitment to Port Macquarie/Sydney services and holds out hope that flight offerings at Port Macquarie Airport may increase in the future if demand dictates," Ms Olsen said.
"From a visitor economy perspective, south east Queensland is a market that continues to show year on year annual growth."
Following completion of the airport upgrade last year, the council is continuing to focus on developing new routes from Port Macquarie Airport, such as Melbourne, to continue to support business and tourism industries.
The last QantasLink direct Brisbane service will operate on January 6.
