The Port Macquarie Pirates defeated the Kempsey Cannonballs on the weekend to earn their right to play in the Mid- North Coast rugby final against fierce rivals the Hastings Valley Vikings.
Games between these two sides are brutal at best.
Each time they take the field against each other, not only is it competition points up for grabs, but it’s bragging rights for who is the town’s best.
Saturday will be no different.
The Pirates are going for three consecutive titles and it will be the second year in a row the two teams have met in the final.
It was under similar circumstances last year.
The Vikings were the dominant team for the majority of the year.
But as they say, anything can happen in finals footy. And it did. The Pirates won the tough bruising encounter 5-0.
The Vikings will be desperate to turn those results around and again go into this clash as out right favourites having taken out the minor premiership and beaten the Pirates on every other occasion this year.
The game kicks off at 3pm on Saturday at Oxley Oval with $5 entry fee and under 16s free.
The other all Port Macquarie final will be played out in Group 3 reserve grade.
The Port City Breakers will take on the Port Macquarie Sharks.
It has been a fairy tale ride for the Breakers who last year finished second last only to the Camden Haven Eagles.
They’ve turned their fortunes around 12 months later to be taking the field in the final.
And it all come down to the old boys.
A large group of the teams players decided to come back and play after having time away from the game to give glory one last crack.
The likes of Damon Booby, Brock Baird, Drew Smith, Jason Turner and the list goes on.
They’ve made it as far as the grand final but can they complete the fairy tale ending? All that stands in their way is their home town rivals the Port Macquarie Sharks.
That game will be played at Wauchope’s Lank Bain Oval and will start at 1.10pm.
It will be the third game of the day following women’s league tag and under 18s.
The last game of the day will be first grade which will kick off at 3pm.
