Hastings Secondary College has been chosen as the over-riding banner for the town's two high schools, the Port News can reveal.
The Department of Education and Communities (DEC) has submitted the name and now awaits the final tick of approval from the Minister of Education.
Last month, the DEC it confirmed plans to establish a new secondary College, which will see senior students travel freely between the town's two high schools from 2015.
Under the umbrella of the new College model, Westport High School and Port Macquarie High School campuses will be combined in the aim of creating more specialised learning opportunities for local students.
A Department spokesman said Hastings Secondary College was chosen after a long selection process and community consultation.
Schools asked students, parents, teachers and the general public to put forward suggestions.
It is now up to the Minister if the name is suitable to stay.
The College is set to operate from the start of the 2015 school year with Year 11 and 12 students able to access subjects on both original school sites.
