ONLY a couple of months into its reign and there should be some generous applause for the newly elected council’s two-hour parking trial in areas of Port’s CBD.

Nothing gets Port Macquarie more riled than parking issues (well, perhaps the Glasshouse), and as soon as the parking changes were flagged on our website yesterday, opinion was divided.
The one thing for sure is that something needs to be tried to improve business and get more feet flowing through our main streets.
The one thing that will genuinely make this work is an unspoken agreement between the employees, employers and workers throughout this region that they’ll keep those parking spaces free for the use of shoppers. It would defeat the purpose of trying to create breathing space for the people with dollars to spend, to clog it up with people too lazy to use their designated work car work spaces (where possible).
If we are serious about reinvigorating the CBD, then we need to go that extra yard and park well away from work sites in the hope that council’s first major salvo, has a real chance of helping our businesses survive.
