The supermarket, pictured, has 32 staff and has operated in Port Macquarie for more than 40 years.
A Woolworths spokeswoman said the decision to close was made because it was “a smaller format store which no longer meets the needs of the community.”
As for the future of the staff, the spokeswoman said it was the company’s priority to relocate them and it was working through that process.
Woolworths had a development application approved in 2009 for the site on the corner of William and Short streets by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
The application was to tear down the building and re-develop the site.
Council’s group manager of development and assessment Dan Croft said the council had not recently heard from the company about its plans for the site.
The car park is on Crown land and has been handed back to the state government. It will stay a car park until further notice.
The car park is part of the foreshore and will be discussed in future development plans for the area.
