Midwives came up with the ideas as a tribute to their colleague who died in a light plane crash in Sydney less than two weeks ago.
The Kathy Sheppard Scholarship Trust Fund will
promote midwifery education.
Friend and colleague Louise Harper said in this way Mrs Sheppard’s memory would remain as special as she herself had been to
colleagues.
Midwives have invited the
community to contribute photos of the babies that Mrs Sheppard helped into the world.
The photos will form part of a
collage, probably centred around Mrs Sheppard’s photo, to take pride of place in Port Macquarie Base Hospital’s maternity unit.
Photos will not be returned.
They should be dropped in to
Port Macquarie Base Hospital maternity unit.
“Apart from her girls and family - midwifery was Kathy’s biggest love; to be part of a couple’s birthing experience is truly special and unique, one which Kathy felt very strongly about, one that all midwives treasure,” Mrs Harper said.
Mrs Sheppard worked as a
midwife at the former Hastings District Hospital.
When Port Macquarie Base Hospital opened, Mrs Sheppard worked in all areas of maternity.
But the birthing suite was her greatest joy.
“Kathy was passionate about the care women and families received during their birthing journey and shared that passion with students and colleagues alike,” Mrs Harper said.
“Kathy saw ongoing education for midwives as vital to understanding the process of birth and to appreciate the miracle of life.”
In 2000, Mrs Sheppard joined Wingaway Air - an aeromedical patient transport firm.
Mrs Sheppard returned to
her vocation part-time in 2009,
dividing her time between midwifery and flying.
Mrs Harper said the midwives wanted to remember Kathy in a way that would continue into the future.
The trust fund and collage idea
