Dean Young following in father's steps

Now, Dean Young is taking his first steps into the representative arena.

The talented St George-Illawarra Dragons utility will don his maiden Country jersey on Friday night at Port Macquarie’s Regional Sports Stadium.

And, a strong performance could put him in the New South Wales Blues’ selectors’ sights – and a chance to replicate dad Craig’s exploits on rugby league’s toughest stage.

“I have to admit, I haven’t thought about it too much,” Young told the Port News.

“I’m just concentrating on playing well for the Dragons.

“However, I set a goal to make the Country team and I’ve achieved it.

“It’s my first rep jumper, so I’m excited to be in the side.”

While named on the bench, alongside Sydney Roosters’ Todd Carney, North Queensland Cowboy Willie Mason and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs from the Canberra Raiders, Young can expect plenty of game time during the annual AAMI Country v City clash.

“We have a versatile forward pack with the likes of Anthony Laffranchi, Glenn Stewart, Ben Creagh, Brett White, Kade Snowden and Michael Ennis,” he said.

“At this stage, it appears I’ll move back to lock.

“I’m comfortable in that position, especially playing there on a regular basis with the Dragons.

“But, I can also relieve Mick (Ennis) in the dummy half role if called upon.

“I’m enjoying my first day in camp, and I’ll be ready to rip in on Friday night.”

With St George-Illawarra sitting on top of the NRL ladder, with seven wins to their credit, Young joins team-mates Ben Creagh, Brett Morris and Michael Weyman in action this week.

Creagh is a member of the Country squad too, while Morris and Weyman were named in the Australian side to face New Zealand at AAMI Park, Melbourne – also on Friday night.
