TWO Hastings students have achieved near-perfect scores in the Higher School Certificate exams marking a stellar end to a 13-year school career.
Josee Hart of St Columba Anglican School and Brad Ellison of MacKillop College both achieved a remarkable ATAR of 99.05.
With full marks and a state ranking of 10th in Extension 1 Mathematics, an OnStage nomination for his HSC Individual Drama performance, and the top HSC Advanced English mark in MacKillop College’s extremely successful Advanced English cohort, Brad was also named the dux of MacKillop College for 2017.
Brad was glowing with pride when the ATARs were released and said he worked hard throughout the HSC course, was blessed with wonderful teachers and was excited to learn that his effort was rewarded.
“MacKillop students did so well and I am so happy for all my friends,” Brad said. “I’d really like to thank all my teachers at MacKillop for their support and commitment to teaching.”
Josee studied advanced English, mathematics, ancient history, geography, biology and chemistry and said her result was proof that hard work pays off.
“The school and my family have really helped. A lot of things came together. I didn’t expect to do so well, so it’s a lovely surprise,” she said.
“I’ve had a few offers for scholarships with universities thanks to the results, so I’m still deciding. I’d like a career in environmental science.
“Nature is really important to me. I want to work in conservation. I’ve spent a lot of time in nature and I feel it’s important to look after the environment in order to look after and help people.”
Balancing all of their subjects and keeping a consistent level of studying was a challenge they were prepared for.
“It’s hard to keep up the motivation,” Josee said.
“People talk it up as being real hard, but it’s important to remember it’s an enjoyable year if you can keep things in perspective.”

More than 100 MacKillop College students made the state honours list by finishing in the top ten per cent of the state for individual subjects.
Brad’s 10th place in extension 1 mathematics was almost matched by Isabella Candotti who placed 16th in the state for biology. Isabella was a close second overall, achieving a 98.15 on her HSC, joining 16 other students scoring over 90 at the school this year.
MacKillop College deputy principal Jennifer Campbell said the students were an inspiration.
“The students built wonderful relationships with their teachers, they responded to the high standards set by the school, they worked incredibly hard, and it is a joy to share their success,” Mrs Campbell said.
