He showed pace beyond his years to beat his more-fancied 13-year-old rivals easily in his first visit to the Hastings.
The Redcliffe triathlon club member, along with mum Dianne and dad Graham, made the trip to the Mid-North Coast as they will all be cheering dad across the finish line in Ironman on Sunday.
“Mum is a former triathlete and dad did it in Cairns last year so that’s where I did it,” he said.
“I might come back next year, I’m not sure yet.”
Close trains twice a week for the run with his triathlon club and it was this training which prepared him for his success.
He had a couple of blisters on the bottom of his feet to show for his efforts.
“I’m not buggered though, not at all,” he said.
Attention now turns to Sunday’s full Ironman and 70.3 events.
