Port Macquarie has its own version of the Choir of Hard Knocks, and is inviting new members to come and join it for its second year of operation starting Tuesday February 7.
Called the Absolutely Everybody choir, it is run by the Port Macquarie Community College and falls under the umbrella of the School of Hard Knocks in Melbourne, started by the indefatigable Jonathan Welch.
Absolutely Everybody choir is open to any members of the Hastings and Macleay community who have been marginalised socially or are experiencing challenges such as mental ill-health, physical disability, stroke, isolation, homelessness or are victims of domestic violence.
It has members aged from 18 to 92.
The choir meets every Tuesday during term time at the Conservatorium Mid North Coast Hall, 56 Hollingworth Street, from 10.30am until 12.30pm. It is free and morning tea and lunch are provided.
It is an important aspect of the choir that the music is taken seriously. Members learn to sing in harmony and the techniques of choir singing are taught in every session, but in a very supportive way.
New members are warmly welcomed and we encourage potential members to come and give it a go.
There is scientific proof of the benefits of singing for both the mind and body, and Absolutely Everybody is also a wonderful community to belong to.
