What the men's professional top three had to say
► FIRST Paul Ambrose, 30, Sydney in 08:35.52
“I was on the back foot. I was isolated at the start. I was by myself basically all day. I just kept to my own race plan and tried to stay strong, and eventually picked them up along the way, a bit further into the race. I was surprised to have a bit of a margin off the bike.”
► SECOND Luke Bell, 36, Melbourne in 08:38.33
“Credit to Ambrose. Over all the years, I know he’s a tough racer. He can turn himself inside out and upside down. He took the bull by the horns and went for it It’s such a good race. The support out there’s amazing.”
►THIRD Brian Fuller, 33, Gold Coast in 08:49.38
“I didn’t have a good swim. I kept getting hit by all the logs in the water. I rode pretty solid. Nick Baldwin and Peter Robertson decided to put the hammer down on the second lap and I just let them go. In the end it paid off because I kept going and they both blew up.”
►►FIRST local home: Shaun Smith was the first Port Macquarie local to cross the line in Sunday's Toyota Ironman Australia on his home circuit. Smith finished with a time of nine hours, 56 minutes and was thrilled.
It started with a great swim, but then he nearly went too hard on the bike and brought himself undone. Smith came 13th in the 40-44 category, and put his great race down to his wife Fiona and children Georgia and Ella.
"They're my rock," he said. "They got me through the tough days."
