An air and sea search began about noon on Sunday when unattended fishing gear was found where a fisherman had been seen earlier.
But it was not until the man failed to turn up at a golf date was he reported missing.
His golf mates were aware he intended to go fishing before playing and when he failed to turn up, they raised the alarm.
Polair, Marine Rescue and the surf lifesaving club were involved in the search.
It is understood the man’s body was found in the water about one kilometre north of Miners Beach about 3.30pm.
It is believed the man was a Port Macquarie local but a name has yet to be released.
A post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death which is not being considered suspicious.
Meanwhile, authorities are continuing their search for a man missing near Forster. READ MORE HERE
