Implementing an organisational restructure, improving strategic planning and fostering better community connections are just a few of the aims of the new executive team at Kempsey Shire Council.

New general manager Craig Milburn and director, corporate Stephen Mitchell kick-started their roles on February 5.

Mr Milburn enjoyed a 10-year stint at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in roles including the director of community services.

He resigned as the Glasshouse project director in 2008 to take up a position at Coffs Harbour City Council as the director of corporate business.

With over 40 years’ experience in private industry, local government and the not-for-profit sector, Mr Milburn joins Kempsey council from his most recent role as director of finance, corporate and community services at Shoalhaven City Council on the south coast of NSW.

Mr Milburn said he will be spending the first few months of his role meeting with council staff and community groups.

“I’m committed to meeting with all staff and major community groups over the first few months, to understand more about the strengths of the organisation and how I can build on the restructure process council is undertaking to develop an organisational vision that brings council closer to the community,” he said.

While building on the council’s organisational restructure and helping to implement changes will be part of his role, Mr Milburn said he will also be focusing on the positive work being carried out by council.

He said a recent review of council services highlighted areas of improvement, but there is a lot of positive work that needs to continue.

Council will also recruit for a director of operations after Robert Scott left the role on January 25. Mr Scott, with 19 years experience in local government, was a former employee of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council before taking up a director’s role in Kempsey.

He is now the manager planning and assets in water services for MidCoast Council.
