PORT Macquarie teenager Patrick Mullens tuned up for next month’s country championships with a second-place finish in the 400-metre freestyle on Saturday.
Mullens (4.31.07) was pipped by Forster’s Nash Wilkes (4.29.74) which coach Michael Mullens said was still a satisfying swim.
“A lot of our juniors have gone really well, but I was really happy with how Patrick swam,” he said.
“It was three seconds over his PB, but he’ll be better for it in three weeks when we’re not roasting.”
The Port Macquarie club held their own in a weekend that was dominated by the Newcastle and Sydney clubs.
