The garden will add to the learning capabilities of students at the school with the garden close to completion.
Kindergarten and year one students created a gorgeous video with the help of the Port News and hope to have a response from Costa soon:
They even crafted his trademark look, creating long beards and gnome hats from cardboard.
Verena Gandy is the garden’s coordinator and said the video is a great way to grab the attention of Costa and have him orchestrate the grand opening.
“He’s well known and his love for gardens and kids is great. The kids all know of him, he’s eccentric and a lot of fun,” she said.
“The garden is a great way to get them outdoors and to get them looking closer at nature.
“Showing the kids that they can learn things outside, that it’s not all classroom based, is great. They can read stories, they can write, they can look at the plants … it’s a way to stay in touch with nature.”
They hope to have the garden opening this year, but are happy to fit into Costa’s plans.
The garden includes a sensory trail constructed from various materials that is part of the larger pathway system with no dead ends, and is wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair.
Other features include outdoor seating, a 20th anniversary paved area, outdoor musical instruments, plants and elements that reflect, excite and develop the five senses, and artwork and sculpture.
