The Wallabies skills coach also talked up the impact Foley and Reece Hodge could have at altitude this week when Australia take on South Africa in Bloemfontein.

Foley had an off night with the boot in Australia's 35-29 defeat to the All Blacks in the second Bledisloe Test, missing four of his six kicks.

However, the Wallabies five-eighth has not missed a kick in his other three Rugby Championship matches, including 12 from 12 successful attempts in Australia's last two outings.

Byrne, nicknamed "Mick the Kick" after a stellar Australian rules career, said there was no need for a deep-and-meaningful with Foley, nor were there any particular technical issues to iron out.

"There was nothing major there," Byrne said. "As far as I could see, he was just a bit quick on the ball. We talked about that, got his rhythm back and he was right.

"It's [about having] faith, especially when you have a hiccup. It's like in any sport - golfers are a classic one.

"We look at [Marc] Leishman; he's just won the [BMW Championship] but you go back to a tournament he had before, he wasn't hitting the ball really well there.

"You can't get concerned about what happened. You trust your rhythm, go back and work on what you need to work on. There were a couple of little things we focused on but the main thing was just get back into your rhythm and trust yourself. Up until that game and since that game, he's been going well."

Rugby players look forward to training sessions in South Africa more than anywhere in the world.

Why? Because if they are training at altitude, almost every player in the team tries their luck at a long-distance kicking competition given the ball goes further in the thinner air.

Last year in Johannesburg, Reece Hodge was the centre of attention at Wallabies training; nailing kicks from 65 to 70 metres.

Even Israel Folau and Samu Kerevi, not renowned kickers, were sending them over from 60 metres to the astonishment of teammates.

With a number of big boots in their armoury, Byrne believes kicking on Sunday will be crucial for the Wallabies and may be a key factor in who gets over the line given only one try was scored last year in the same fixture.

"Goalkicking's a big part of it, here especially," Byrne said. "If it's going to be a tight game, you've got to get your three points or your two points when they're on offer.

"If you've got a guy who can kick the ball from 55 metres and you're going to go in and try and slow the ball down and you know the guy's going to kick penalties from there, you might have a second thought about giving away a penalty from 55-metres out.

"It might just be enough to say to a team, 'if you want to start giving away penalties here [is what can happen]' ??? extend the safe zone."

While Hodge has an enormous boot on him, as evidenced by his 60-metre penalty in Wellington last year, his accuracy overall at Test level is less than 30 per cent.

Byrne pointed out the 23-year-old was taking his kicks from extremely difficult points on the field and would be required if necessary in Bloemfontein from beyond halfway.

"His action's really good but the problem with Hodgey is when he steps up ??? he's kicking them from about 100 metres away," Byrne said. "There's not many blokes that are nailing 100 per cent at that range. If you look at Hodgey's eight kicks and multiply by the distance of his kick, he'd probably be twice as far as any other kicker. He's kicking the ball really well."

Byrne expects the Springboks to be ultra physical on the weekend in response to their 57-0 shellacking at the hands of New Zealand.

"We've got to match them in that area," Byrne said. "When you come here, you've got to be prepared to match that part of it right from the first whistle. There's going to be - I would imagine - a little bit more [physicality] this week given the week they've had. That's going to be a challenge for our boys to step up and meet them in that regard."
