The exhibition will be open from Saturday, September 2-9 between 9.30am to 4.30pm each day (closed September 3).
“This year’s theme is ‘Popular Culture’ and explores how popular culture, whether it be museum, theatre, dance, film, television, sports or fashion has changed over time,” Debbie Sommers, Port Macquarie Museum’s Volunteer Curator, said.
“The 1960s was marked by great social change and many youth of the era were creating their own fashion styles. Colours and fabrics were bold and the decade remembered for its new mod and hippie fashions however fashion trends took longer to migrate to regional areas. Passion for Fashion shows the fashion, fabrics and flair of the Sixties – Port Macquarie style.
“The exhibition is a must see for anyone interested in classic fashion and textiles. Fashions during the decade were influenced by the availability of new and innovative synthetic materials. Polyester, plastic, PVC and vinyl were used extensively and artificial furs and leathers were produced in response to animal rights concerns. The exhibition shows some of these fashion innovations.
“Also featured are digital photographs from the 1960s taken at numerous local social events.
“Fashion parades, weddings, Carnivals of the Pine, parties, debutante and fund raising balls and dances, and presentation nights. Many locals may see themselves, their friends or family members.”
Passion for Fashion is an official event of History Week 2017, supported by the History Council of NSW.
