With a background in administration management and as a fitness instructor, Kathleena was browsing a state government employment website and was struck by one role in particular.
“It just said ‘opportunity Sheriff Officer’,” the new recruit said on her second week in the role.
“After I read the position description I just realised that I really wanted the job.
“But I had no idea what the role required. My background certainly helped in the area of fitness.”
After working her way through a seven-step process, Kathleena was eventually offered a role encompassing Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Kempsey court houses.
“Once I accepted the role in Port Macquarie I went to Sydney for a very intensive seven week training program,” she said.
“This included understanding the powers of the sheriff’s office, court house procedure, how to work with fellow staff, how to maintain a calm court environment, effective communication and security.
I really gained momentum as the training progressed through the seven weeks. But I loved the challenge and thrived in that environment.

“This was intensive theory and practical work. There was also tactical training and I now have developed a whole new set of skills.
“I really gained momentum as the training progressed through the seven weeks. But I loved the challenge and thrived in that environment.”
Kathleena said she loved the role and described it as the best job she has ever done.
She also praised her fellow sheriff officers and the courthouse staff for their support.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said Port Macquarie’s busy regional courthouse hosts Local and District Court sittings and Sheriff’s Officers play a vital role in maintaining a safe and calm environment.
“There are now five Sheriff’s Officers who work at Port Macquarie and travel with the judiciary for court sittings in places such as Kempsey and Taree,” Mrs Williams said.
“Sheriff’s Officers conduct routine scans of people entering court facilities and have the power to confiscate weapons and other dangerous items to ensure a safe environment. During trials, Sheriff’s Officers provide support for jurors.”
