Alongside 40 keen motorcyclists, I rode on August 5, from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie to mark DonateLife Week – the national week to raise awareness of the importance or organ donor registration.
The weather was the epitome of perfect for our ride, almost as if the heavens were getting behind the cause, and everyone had a fantastic time.
Throughout the weeks leading up to this ride, I’ve met some truly phenomenal people and heard their experiences of organ donation – organ recipients, the families of organ donors and those waiting for organs.
Some of those who shared their stories joined us on the day, either on the ride itself or visiting us at the start in Coffs Harbour and end in Port Macquarie.
The Impact
Port Macquarie local, mother of three, and organ recipient Khyleah Magnus joined us at the finish line to celebrate the success of the day, and the fact that receiving organs gave her family their mother back.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Tacking Point Lions Clubs who were a fantastic support this week, manning stalls locally to encourage everyone to register, and for cooking a delicious lunch for all our riders at the finish line.
BCU, Westport Club, and Telstra were a tremendous support and raised awareness for organ donor registration throughout DonateLife Week.
There are so many people who contributed towards this day being such a success and unfortunately there just isn’t space to thank them all individually.
But you all know who you are and I would like to thank them so much for their support and assistance in raising awareness for such an important and worthy cause.
How to help
It’s not too late to register your organ donation wishes.
Over 1,400 Australians are waiting for an organ right now and we need to do better for them.
You can register right now on the DonateLife website: register.donatelife.gov.au.
